Corporate Whoredom Every night I have the same nightmare. I awaken to the sound of my alarm clock at 6am in the morning. After I shower and dress I start the long trek in the city. My destination: a windowless office with off white walls and chipped linoleum floors. I plop down into a cubicle that is roughly the size of a Turkish prison cell and turn on a computer that crashes on a daily basis. As the day drags on I am forced to make copies by the hundreds, answer the phone in a pseudo-cheerful tone and data inputting about a gazillion watts of information praying the entire time that the computer doesn't freeze on me. All the while sitting under an annoying bright fluorescent light that any woman who has ever entered a dressing room in Macy's knows does not flatter anyone's complexion. Did I mention that it hums? When I say hum I don't mean to the tune of "God Save the Queen". No it does this low vibrating single monotone hum that is more annoying than Simon on American Idol. Yet somehow I muddle through anxiously waiting for 5pm to arrive so I can sneak out the back way and head home to a hot dinner, 50 watt light bulbs and Entertainment Tonight. Five minutes before I can leave this corporate drudgery behind I spot my boss walking toward me as if in slow motion. I try to run and hide but I'm wearing my new beige high heels, which look great, but pinch like a motherfucker and my desk and I use the term loosely couldn't hide Webster let alone me. My boss comes to stand before me and utters the words that strike fear and dread into my very soul, "I need you to stay overtime tonight." "Nooooooooo"! I scream as I sit straight up in my bed. Thank god it was only a nightmare. Imagine having to get up 5 days a week, work for 8 hours a day in a small cubicle in a corporate environment wearing boring professional clothes. A wave of relief washes over me... until I spot a pair of high heel beige shoes next to a black pantsuit. Then the clock strikes 6am and the alarm goes off...
